What You Can Do to Help Prevent Lockouts

Lockouts, what can you say other than we have all experienced them at one time or another? These situations can cause you much frustration as they eat up huge chunks of time trying to get them resolved. That’s why you need to be proactive when it comes to avoiding lockout situations. How do you do that? In this article, I will offer some tips and suggestions on how to do that very thing. If you try them, I believe it will go a long way toward having a lockout situation in your future.

Ways to Prevent Lockouts

Here are some things a person can do to avoid being caught in a lockout situation:

  • Establish a routine with keys

One way not to forget or misplace your keys is to establish a routine with them. What do I mean by this? For me personally, I like to put my keys right next to my wallet when my wallet is not on my person. I do that because the chances of me forgetting to take my wallet with me are almost slim to none. Other people like to keep their keys next to their cellphones or on the same hook somewhere in their house. This repetitive key placement helps establish a routine where it makes it tough to forget to take your keys with you and get locked out.

  • Put your keys on a hook on the entryway door

What’s the toughest way for you to forget something when leaving your home or office? It’s to have that something right in front of your eyes. It’s no different when it comes to office, home, and car keys. That’s why it may help you not forget them if you put them on a hook on your door or very close to it at eye level. That way every time you go to open that door your keys will be right there dangling before your very eyes. This is a very good way to keep yourself from experiencing a lockout.

  • Do a double check of your surroundings before leaving

You can avoid getting locked out of somewhere by doing a double check of the area of your home, office or car seats before you leave them. Chances are when you do this, you will then spot the keys you are about to leave behind. By doing this, you have just avoided finding yourself in a lockout situation.

  • Carry spare keys on you

If you forget, lose or misplace your keys, you are most definitely going to be faced with some type of home, business or auto lockout situation. That is unless you have a spare key on you. Keep a spare key in your wallet or purse to your home, car and work entryway doors. That way if something happens to your regular set of keys, you will still be covered and not find yourself in a lockout situation.

Spare keys are great to have but we have to give you a stern warning here too. Most people like to hide spare keys on their vehicles and around their homes to help prevent lockouts. This is a great big no-no and opens you up to many risks. Would be thieves know all of the best hiding places on cars and around homes to hide keys. It just makes their task that much easier to accomplish. So, resist the temptation to hide vehicle and home keys for later use.

  • Switch to keyless or smart locks

Without a doubt, the single biggest reason for anyone experiencing a lockout situation has to do with lost, stolen, forgotten or misplaced keys. You have to ask yourself then, what if keys were no longer a part of the equation? It would stand to reason that you would be less prone to lockouts. That’s exactly the case with keyless and smart locks. These locks are not dependent on having a key on your person in order to unlock a door lock.

Keyless locks simply require a code or other device to activate them. Smart locks are controlled by your phone or another smart device. These types of locks not only help prevent lockouts, but they also make it easier and more convenient to unlock and open a door. You also get the added benefit from them of not having to carry a big wad of heavy keys around with you too.

What to Do If You Are Locked Out of Your Home, Business or Automobile

Of course, not all lockouts can be prevented. That’s because not all lockouts are caused by such things as losing keys, having a defective key or forgetting your keys. Sometimes a lock will simply fail and not let you into your home, business or car. Locksmiths carry everything they need on their service vehicles to resolve a lockout situation. It’s one of the main locksmith services they provide so they are always prepared to do it if necessary. They even have the ability to make a new key or replace an entire lock if the lockout situation requires it.

Another reason locksmith is great to call in a lockout situation is that most of them keep a locksmith on call 24-hours a day 365 days a year. That means there is always a locksmith ready to help you out if you experience a lockout. Emergency lockout services are even available late at night, on weekends, and on all of the major holidays too.

With so many locks surrounding you in your life, it makes having the number of a locksmith on hand something that’s essential. So be proactive and have your local locksmith's number programmed into your phone’s address list. That way, in the event of an unexpected lockout, you are always prepared to get help quickly.
